Product Description

The Premise

A photograph isn't finished when it's edited digitally. It's finished when it's held, sequenced, and hung on a wall.

Print as Practice is a three-day workshop built around a simple but often overlooked idea: a photograph isn't finished when the shutter clicks. Led by photographer, educator, and writer Jared Thomas Tapy in partnership with VSCO and Nice Film Club, the workshop invites participants into the complete photographic process—from seeing and shooting to editing, printing, and exhibiting.

Beginning with a guided photowalk through Lower Manhattan, participants will photograph alongside Jared before returning their film to Nice Film Club for professional processing and scanning. Each roll will then be transformed into a handmade darkroom contact sheet, creating a tangible starting point for thoughtful discussion and group critique. From there, participants will refine their selections using VSCO before producing a final exhibition-quality print.

The workshop culminates in a one-night exhibition at Nice Editions, where each participant's finished photograph will be displayed as part of a collective gallery show—bringing the entire creative process full circle, from the first frame exposed to the final print on the wall.

Day One: Photo Walk - August 8th, 12pm - 3pm

The workshop opens with a group photo walk through lower Manhattan. Participants shoot their rolls; they will be dropped off with Nice Film Club at the end of the day for processing and scanning. Included in this ticket are the development and scanning credits for 2 rolls-- more than 2 rolls will result in a separate order and additional fees.

Participants will receive their scans via their Nice Film Club accounts by Sunday, August 9th. Participants will then decide which of their two rolls they'd like to work from for the rest of the workshop.

More details will be provided about the workflow via confirmation email.

Day Two: Contact Sheet Review - August 12th, 6pm - 9pm

Day two is the center of the workshop. Participants will choose 1 of their two rolls by Monday, August 10th to have made into a darkroom-crafted contact sheet. Participants will receive their contact sheet upon arrival at Nice Editions on August 12th. Then, as a group, participants will review each other's work: choosing frames, making a first print selection directly off the contact sheet, and talking through the reasoning behind each choice.

Alongside the review, Jared Tapy will walk through his own editing process in VSCO: how he gets from a raw scan to a finished frame, and how he thinks about the decisions in between.

The goal is for participants to leave the day with both a chosen frame and a clear process for how to properly edit it.

Between Days Two and Three: The Edit (August 12th - 14th)

Participants take their selected frame and edit it in VSCO on their own time, applying what was covered in the Day Two walkthrough. Once finished, the file goes back to Nice Film Club, who produces a museum-quality 16" x 12" final print, the version that will be displayed on Day Three.

This gap is intentional. It gives participants real time with the edit rather than rushing it inside a single session, and it gives Nice Film Club the lead time a larger print run needs.

Day Three: The Gallery Show - August 15th, 6pm - 10pm

The workshop closes with a group exhibition of everyone's final prints, installed and walked through together at the Nice Editions gallery space. The conversation continues here too, not a formal critique so much as a continuation of the Day Two discussion, now with finished, physical work in front of the group instead of contact sheets.

Participants are encouraged to bring guests to view the show after the group discussion at 8pm.

About

Jared Thomas Tapy (b.2000) is a New York City street and documentary photographer whose work is defined by its commitment to attention, honesty, and the lived experience of the city. Moving fluidly between large-scale public events and quiet, unassuming moments, his photographs resist spectacle in favor of something more enduring. Gestures, relationships, and fragments of everyday life that reveal a deeper human narrative.
