Film Scanning: 2K, 4K and Pro Scans | Nice Film Club

Develop film · Scanning

The scan is where your film becomes a photograph.

Every roll we develop is scanned in our lab on Noritsu and Fuji Frontier scanners. Keep as much of the negative as you need — 2K, 4K, or a Pro Scan finished by hand.

How a roll is scanned

From negative to file, under one roof.

Nothing is sent out. The technicians who develop your film scan it, check it and upload it to your gallery.

Scan quality

Choose how much of the negative you keep.

Every scan starts from the same negative on the same scanner. What changes is how many pixels you take home, and how much human attention goes into the colour.

See the difference

Five times the pixels, from the same frame.

A 35mm frame scanned at scanner max holds about 30 megapixels. That is the room you need to crop in, print large, or come back to a roll years from now.

Questions

Before you send a roll.

Which scan quality should I choose?
−
2K is plenty for sharing and small prints. Choose 4K if you print large, crop, or want an archive. Choose Pro Scan when colour is critical — portfolio, exhibition or client work.
A TIFF keeps more image information for editing and printing. JPEGs are ready to share. Standard 4K and Pro Scan include JPEG + TIFF; Standard 2K lets you unlock TIFFs frame by frame after upload. TIFF unlocks are not available for Standard 1K. Noritsu TIFFs are 16-bit and Frontier TIFFs are 8-bit.
Turnaround changes with the lab queue and the options on your roll. Check the current turnaround below and the estimate when you order. Rush is available.
Noritsu HS-1800 is our default, with crisp alignment and 16-bit TIFFs. Fuji Frontier offers a classic lab colour feel, 8-bit TIFFs, and sloppy borders or full rebates on 35mm. Choose your scanner per roll.
Yes. Choose Pro Scan and send reference images and notes to proscans@nicefilmclub.com. A technician refines each frame, and you can review your scans and discuss colour and tonal adjustments. Pro Scan covers colour and tonal work, not dust removal or retouching.
