Product Description

Summer 2023, the same year Ilana lost their dad, they slept 20 nights alone on a lake, camping in Rockland County, NY. One night, Ilana spent an hour photographing the stars. Clutching their shutter for 5 minutes each, Ilana waited for time to pass by, staring at the sky above. And they keep coming back to the stars, particularly in the summertime.

The analog medium prevents this vast expanse of negative space from feeling empty. The silver halide emulsion handles the subtle gradation of the sky with a smoothness that digital sensors often render as banding. Instead of a flat block of color, the blue tones deepen naturally from horizon to zenith. The grain structure is distinct and essential here. It gives the air a physical texture that creates a sense of atmospheric weight and makes the sky feel like a tangible presence.

Due to the hand-made nature of the printing process, minor color variations may occur.

Ilana Jade Roth

About

Ilana Jade Roth (she/they) is a New York City born and raised image and paper artist, who works and resides in Uptown, NYC. Discussing topics such as gender, patriarchy and beauty, Ilana uses their body to answer questions about the inherited social scripts that weaken our sense of truth and autonomy. Often photographing in the company of the natural world, and especially water, they pursue a way of being that is without capitalist interference, and allows for more expansive self-witnessing.

Because peering through my camera feels like a window into what my eyes missed, and I want to see more.
