Lab Comparison

Nice Film Club vs The Darkroom

An honest comparison of two mail-in film labs. Same film in, very different experience out.

The Short Version

The Darkroom is a trusted, affordable mail-in lab that has been processing film since 1976. They offer the lowest entry price at $13/roll and accept almost every film format imaginable.

Nice Film Club is a modern film lab and photo platform. We color-correct every frame individually, deliver your scans in shareable digital galleries with contact sheets and AI organization, and offer membership pricing that makes us price-competitive or cheaper — while delivering a dramatically better experience.

💡 The key difference

The Darkroom is a lab that scans your film. Nice Film Club is a platform that develops your film, organizes your photos, and becomes part of your creative workflow.

Scan Quality

The Darkroom's base Standard scan is half the resolution of Nice Film Club's Standard 2K. To get equivalent resolution, you need their Enhanced tier at $16/roll — and even then, frame-by-frame color correction is not included.

Nice Film Club color-corrects every single frame on every order — even at our base tier. Our scanning team reviews each exposure individually and adjusts density, color balance, and tone. This is not automated batch processing.

✅ Nice Film Club wins on scan quality

Frame-by-frame correction included at every tier. Higher base resolution. The difference is visible in every frame.

Digital Experience

The Darkroom delivers scans through a basic dashboard and a 3.8-star mobile app with reported crashes and missing features.

Nice Film Club delivers scans in modern, shareable digital galleries with AI tagging, digital contact sheets, and permanent hosting. Your gallery grows into a searchable archive of your film photography.

Switching Labs

How do I switch from The Darkroom to Nice Film Club?

Switching is simple — there's nothing to cancel or transfer. Just send your next roll to us instead:

  1. Place an order on our site — select your film type, scan options, and any add-ons
  2. Print your free shipping label and mail your film to our lab
  3. Receive your frame-by-frame corrected scans in a shareable digital gallery
Many photographers try us with a single roll to compare results. Most who do end up staying — the scan quality and digital experience speak for themselves.

Is Nice Film Club more expensive than The Darkroom?

At non-member prices, Nice Film Club starts at $17.99/roll vs The Darkroom's $13/roll. However, with a membership the math changes significantly:

Per-Roll Pricing (35mm C-41 + Standard 2K Scan vs Darkroom Enhanced):
  • The Darkroom Enhanced (equivalent resolution): $16.00
  • Nice Film Club (Non-Member): $17.99
  • Nice Film Club (Nice): $14.99
  • Nice Film Club (Very Nice): $11.99 — cheaper than The Darkroom
  • Nice Film Club (Super Nice): $9.99 — $6.01 less per roll
Note: The Darkroom's $13 Standard scan is half the resolution of Nice Film Club's base scan. For an apples-to-apples comparison, you need their $16 Enhanced tier. Plus, every Nice Film Club order includes frame-by-frame color correction, digital contact sheets, AI photo organization, and shareable galleries — features The Darkroom doesn't offer at any price.

What makes Nice Film Club scans better than The Darkroom?

The biggest difference is frame-by-frame color correction. At Nice Film Club, every single frame on every order is individually reviewed and adjusted for optimal density, color balance, and tone.

What this means in practice:
  • Mixed lighting situations (indoor/outdoor, tungsten/daylight) are handled per-frame rather than averaged
  • Backlit shots, sunsets, and challenging exposures get individual attention
  • Underexposed or overexposed frames are rescued with precision adjustments
  • Consistent, professional-quality results across an entire roll
The Darkroom's standard and enhanced scan tiers do not include frame-by-frame correction — this level of attention is what separates a good lab from a great one.

Is a Nice Film Club membership worth it?

If you develop 4 or more rolls per year, a membership pays for itself through savings alone. But the real value goes beyond price:

What members get:
  • Up to 44% off every roll of development & scanning
  • Discounts on prints and enlargements
  • Discounts on film, books, and accessories in our shop
  • Unlimited hosting for all your scans — your gallery grows forever
  • AI-powered photo organization and tagging
  • Digital contact sheets with every order
  • Priority processing during busy periods
Example: If you develop 12 rolls/year at The Darkroom's Enhanced tier ($16/roll for equivalent resolution), you pay $192. With Very Nice membership at Nice Film Club, you pay $143.88 ($11.99/roll) — saving $48 per year with dramatically better features.

Does Nice Film Club accept all the same formats as The Darkroom?

Nice Film Club currently accepts 35mm and 120 (medium format) film — the two most popular formats used by photographers today.

The Darkroom accepts additional niche formats including 110, 126, APS, 220, 620, and sheet film. If you shoot these specialty formats, The Darkroom may be a better fit for those specific rolls.

However, if you primarily shoot 35mm or 120 — which accounts for the vast majority of film photography — Nice Film Club delivers superior scan quality, a better digital experience, and competitive pricing through memberships.

Many photographers use Nice Film Club for their 35mm and 120 work while keeping a secondary lab for unusual formats.

Ready to process your disposables? Visit our disposable camera development page to get started.

What about specialty films like ECN-2?

We offer ECN-2 motion picture film development as part of our specialty processing services.

About ECN-2: This process develops motion picture film stocks like Kodak Vision3, valued by photographers for their distinctive color characteristics and cinematic aesthetic.

Our Process: We collaborate with Kodak Motion Picture Film Lab in Atlanta for specialized ECN-2 processing, then handle scanning at our facility using professional-grade equipment.

Processing Details: ECN-2 development requires approximately 3 weeks and includes an additional $15 per roll fee to cover the specialized handling requirements.

  • 35mm B&W development + scanning
  • 120 C-41 (color) development + scanning
  • 120 B&W development + scanning

Ready to start saving? Compare all membership tiers and their benefits on our pricing page, or purchase your membership today.

What if I don't use all my credits?

Unused credits roll over indefinitely throughout your active membership period.

Credit Banking:
  • Credits remain valid while membership is active
  • Accumulate reserves during slower shooting periods
  • Apply stored credits during high-volume projects

Strategic Usage: Many members build credit reserves before trips or workshops, then process multiple rolls efficiently upon return.

Seasonal Example: Winter shooting slowdowns allow credit accumulation for spring workshop processing or summer travel film development.

This system provides flexibility while ensuring you receive maximum value from your membership investment.

Interested in this flexibility? See all membership options and start building your credit reserves on our pricing page.

What happens if I cancel my membership?

We understand that circumstances change. Here's exactly what happens when your membership expires:

Immediate Changes Upon Expiration:
  • Scan Deletion: Any scans uploaded more than 30 days ago are immediately deleted from our servers
  • Credit Forfeiture: All unused development and scanning credits are forfeited and cannot be recovered
  • Recent Scans: Scans uploaded within the last 30 days remain accessible under standard non-member terms (30-day retention)

IMPORTANT - Action Required Before Cancelling:
  • Download older scans: Save any scans older than 30 days to your device before your membership expires
  • Use remaining credits: Process any remaining film to maximize your membership value
  • Check upload dates: Review your account to identify which scans will be deleted

Scan Recovery Option:
If you need to recover deleted scans after cancellation, we offer a recovery service for $5.00 per roll. This fee covers the technical costs of retrieving archived data from our backup systems.

Rejoining: You can reactivate membership anytime. However, any previously deleted scans will require the recovery fee to restore.

Before you decide: Review all the benefits and savings you'll miss on our pricing page, or consider whether a different membership tier might better match your current needs.
